Care and Maintenance for Soapstone

Soapstone Care and Maintenance

One of our frequently asked questions is, how do you care for your soapstone? It’s actually pretty simple.

Here’s why soapstone countertops are easy to maintain:

  • It will not stain
  • It is non-porous and should not be sealed
  • It is heat resistant
  • It is bacteria resistant, so it is food safe, and no harsh chemicals or household cleaners are needed for cleaning.
  • It lasts forever
  • It can be repaired by the consumer

To maintain and enhance your soapstone countertops, we recommend soapstone wax and oil.

Using Soapstone Wax and Oil

How to Use Wax & Oil

Use a clean cloth to apply wax & oil in a circular motion to the entire countertop. With a second clean cloth, buff the countertop and wipe off until it dries.

Benefits of Wax & Oil

Wax and Oil enhances the natural beauty, accelerates the patina process, and ensures there is even darkening of the stone. It will naturally treat the surface.

What if your countertop scratches?

Traditional or harder soapstone countertops may occasionally scratch.

If this occurs, there’s an easy fix: oil.

If this scratch is deeper, you can use sandpaper. Depending on the scratch and how deep, first use 80 grit sandpaper, then use 220-grit sandpaper in a circular motion. Finish with 120-grit sandpaper (to match the existing finish of the countertop). Apply oil or wax to the area, and repeat two to three times over a few days in order to match the coloration of the rest of the stone. Reapply as necessary.
