Garden State Soapstone ™’s Churchill Soapstone

Churchill Countertops: Traditional, Sustainable Soapstone

Churchill Soapstone, from the Alberene quarry in Virginia, is one of our customers’ favorite soapstones.

Although it’s slightly harder than other soapstones, Churchill soapstone is a traditional variety of soapstone. Instead of a 2.5, it sits at a 3.0-a 3.5 on the Mohs scale. When untreated, it has a light blue-grey tint, with minimal to no veining. When treated with organic wax and oil, it appears dark black, with some depth and movement movement.

Maybe it’s a favorite because it’s born in the USA, or because the veining movement is subtle but striking. Maybe it’s a favorite because it has become the face of soapstone, the kind that comes to people’s minds when they hear the word “soapstone”.

But it’s also one of the most sustainable varieties of soapstones that we carry. Alberene Soapstone is an eco-friendly material: no chemicals, explosives, or environmentally unfriendly products are used to harvest and fabricate soapstone products. Because its quarried in the USA, it has a smaller carbon footprint. Those seeking LEED points should consider Churchill from Alberene.

All soapstones are impermeable, so they do not need to be sealed. Soapstone is unaffected by weather, water, and humidity, and perfect for both indoor and outdoor use. In addition, soapstone is easy to clean, requiring only soap and water instead of harsh chemicals.
