Why Chefs Use Soapstone

Great cooking requires the right kitchen.

A lot of chefs and cooks come to us and ask what types of countertops they should consider. We always recommend soapstone countertops.

Soapstone is easy to clean and maintain.

Soapstone countertops are non-porous, stain resistant, heat resistant. They don’t require sealing. Some homeowners choose to wax or oil their countertops with our organic soapstone wax and oil (which is food-safe, odorless, and tasteless). Because of all these qualities, they don’t harbor bacteria and they’re easy to clean. Speaking of cleaning, soapstone countertops can be cleaned with soap and water. No harsh chemicals are needed.

Soapstone is a softer countertop material because it contains talc, but if it does get scratches or nicks from heavy use, it can be sanded off by the consumer.

“Homeowners who want to place a hot pot on a countertop from time to time without worrying about damaging the surface will understand why professional chefs often choose soapstone in their homes. Soapstone is non-porous which means the wine spills are not going to stain the surface.” – AAAMarble

HouseLogic also has a great article that recommends cooking tools, kitchen design plans, and organizational advice for professional chefs. It also recommends soapstone countertops.

“For counters, Johnson is all about durable materials like soapstone. “It’s really soft, but only if you start digging a knife into it,” he says. “It can be scratchy, but it can withstand 1,200 degree heat without cracking.” At The Krebs, he says, they roll pasta all over the soapstone counter every day. “I love to watch the counter as it ages and grows in character.”

Another great aspect about soapstone is that it’s a sustainable material. Beyond the fact that it doesn’t need harsh cleaners or sealers, many varieties of soapstone are quarried right here in the USA. This reduces transport energy and reduces its carbon footprint overall. Try Churchill or Old Dominion!

If you love natural stone, and want to get the most out of your kitchen, soapstone is the perfect material for you.
